Those of you that have been following our Ducati Coventry Facebook page will be aware that throughout 2015 we have been undertaking a very special one off project. Transforming a tired looking 1198 track bike into one of the best 1198's we have ever built. Using only the highest quality components from our suppliers who each represent the best suppliers in their respective fields we have succeeded in creating a 200+ BHP, 160 Kilo, Superbike that is the ultimate track day machine.
Early in 2015 the build began with the heart of all great bikes, the engine. Having already seen several European track days the 1198RS engine was in need of a complete refresh. The engine is fitted with factory Omega pistons, Pankl titanium Conrods, RS camshafts and generator. A Ducati Corsa close ratio RS gearbox, lightened flywheel and lightened super finished internal gears. Along with these high spec components the cylinder heads were gas flowed to optimise performance and the crank balanced. With an STM evolution superbike clutch, the engine was ready to be fitted.
When it comes to a bike of this calibre the only frame to be considered was Pierobon. They are an Italian company that is renowned for their extraordinary achievements in the manufacture of motorcycle frames. The aluminium alloy trellis frame of choice for this build is 6.5 KG (30%) lighter than the original. With the engine, footpeg, suspension brackets and adjustable steering head being machined from billet, the loads put on it are able to be distributed optimally. The high level of engineering in these frames is obvious and provides a certain aesthetic appeal. A greater rigidity is also added to the frame with the lower cross-bars connecting to the steering head. The main frame is also complimented with a Pierobon subframe and Dash mount both made from Aluminium and with a black anodized finish.
When it comes to a successful track bike a high performance suspension setup is of paramount importance. Ohlins is the leading manufacturer of motorcycle suspension and is at the pinnacle of suspension technology. The FG 353P gas pressurized forks that are used in the Ducati Desmosedici RR were used on this project. The 43mm forks have been derived directly from competition use and offer an adjustable rebound, compression and spring preload. With TiN coated surface treatment for maximal smooth travel and wear resistance these upside-down forks will be able to provide optimal performance on the track. Coinciding with the Ohlins forks is a TTX DU7130 rear shock fitted with a hydraulic spring preload adjuster and Ohlins steering damper. Adding to the handling of the bike an 1198 RS Ducati Corse swingarm was used to provide a longer wheelbase for the Marchesini 10 spoke magnesium wheels.
With all that performance lined up it was important to ensure the best braking components were utilised. For this the Brembo 320 HPK discs were used combined with the top of the line ZO4 brake pads. Which are housed in the attractive looking nickel plated GP4-RX calipers. These billet 2-piece radial calipers utilise four 32mm pistons with a central bridge structure. The design allows for an overall increase in stiffness and power, raising the performance of the caliper even further. Combined with the Brembo RCS brake and clutch master cylinders ensures the best quality and highest performance braking capabilities.
The next stage in customisation for this build was in relation to the electronics. The 1198RS has been fitted with a fully programmable Nemesis ECU with a custom map designed to optimise the engine performance and get full use from the full titanium Akrapovic evo-3 exhaust system. Courtesy of Bike Sport Developments a custom lightweight race wiring loom has been made with running built in traction control, quickshifter and race handlebar switches.
With this build there has been an abundance of additional special components that have been added which helps optimise performance of the bike. Some of these compenents include:
Once completed it is evident that a normal track fairing kit would not be suitable for such a machine. Therefore we have supplied a full JHP carbon bodywork kit complete with Carlos Checa Replica paintwork to finish what is truly a special build.
