DESMOSEDICI D16RR RACE BIKE

The JHP project team set to work in June this year to transform a road going Ducati Desmosedici D16RR in to a dedicated track and race bike for one of our Norwegian customers.  The owner is a long time Ducati rider and a serious track day rider at many European circuits and is planning to go racing on his Desmosedici. He had already been riding his Desmosedici on track but wanted to improve this already impressive package. We suggested the development of the world's first dedicated Traction Control System (TCS) for the Desmosedici together with engine tuning and specialist race parts, soon a specification was complied that would make this quite possibly the best Ducati Desmosedici in the world!

The bike was sent over from Norway having already seen some serious track day action. Together with our technical partners 'Competition Systems' work began on developing a dedicated traction control system with engine and chassis data logging and full race wiring loom, not to mention tuning the already impressive Desmosedici engine. From our British Superbike race winning experience with the Magneti Marelli SRT traction control system (also used in World Superbike racing) we decided this system was the best possible starting point, whilst we would use the hardware from the Magneti Marelli TCS system, the dedicated TCS software had to be created from scratch.

Once necessary data was compiled from the standard Desmosedici to assist in the development of the TCS, work then began on the chassis and a complete strip down and inspection of every part is required to ensure quality control before the rebuild can start.

The race specification Magneti Marelli MDU020 dash is now mounted together with the TCS rider controls you can see mounted on the left hand handlebar. We fitted Accossato adjustable ratio brake and clutch master cylinders with JHP handlebars, these Italian made master cylinders have achieved success at WSBK level and are used by many of our road and track customers.

The Ohlins forks were stripped and re-sprung, further suspension development work will be carried out during our planned track testing. The rear Ohlins shock absorber was stripped and serviced as was the Ohlins side mounted steering damper. Whilst work continues on the chassis, the engine was stripped ready for tuning. Whilst the engine tuning specification appeared relatively simple on paper, the specialist work required to achieve it was far from easy.

John Hackett spent many hours in the machining room gas flowing the Desmosedici engine cylinder heads to perfection to release even more horsepower. Detailed modifications were made and one off parts machined to allow the fitment of a lighter Ducati Corse generator assembly and flywheel. The significant reduction in weight will allow the engine to climb through the revs much faster. The engine was rebuilt and blueprinted and titanium fixings were used throughout to further reduce weight. We replaced the standard Ducati dry ramp slipper clutch with a JHP Racing ramp and ball bearing slipper clutch for improved performance, we also fitted a billet JHP Racing clutch cover.

With the engine now complete it was carefully slotted back into to chassis. Work can now begin on rebuilding the chassis and locating the necessary TCS and data logging hardware and ultra lightweight purpose made race wiring loom.

Having fitted similar data logging hardware on the JHP built Pierobon F042 bike (see previous project  features), we soon installed the front fork potentiometer, that is the blue rod you see running the length of the front fork and is used to measure and record the suspension travel, the same system was fitted to measure the rear shock absorber. All parts required to mount the data logging hardware had to  be purpose made in our machine shop.

The Desmosedici is now back on its wheels, albeit temporarily, the bike arrived fitted with carbon wheels, these are going to be changed for purpose made and race proven Marchesini 16.5” magnesium wheels (exclusively available from JHP). The Marchesini 16.5” wheels will allow a greater choice of racing slick tyres with greater compound choice for different circuits and riding conditions.

The next major installation was to fit the Magneti Marelli SRT ECU, a one off and carefully crafted carbon ECU shelf was  made to fit to the aftermarket carbon front subframe which came already fitted on the bike. Many hours were spent ensuring the ECU was mounted in exactly the right position, with front end space at a premium everything had to fit to exacting measurements.

Here you can see the attention to detail in the build process, note the rectifier re-sited to aid cooling as the bike will be subjected to intense riding conditions. We have also now re-fitted the radiator fans to also assist cooling. Titanium fixings have been fitted wherever possible throughout  the chassis to reduce weight wherever possible.

We fitted a race pattern shifter allowing super quick gear changes without the need to lift off the throttle, this saves precious time per lap, when you think of how many gear changes you do per track session or during a race, a quick shifter is a must for the serious rider.

As you can see the build is nearing completion, the full race wiring loom is now fitted, to help reduce weight we have installed a lightweight racing battery. Engine start is now via the toggle switch which now replaces the normal ignition key start. You can clearly see the TCS rider controls on the left hand handlebar.

We had to weld purpose made Lambda sensor points to the Termignoni full open pipe race exhaust for engine mapping purposes. Each sensor measures the exhaust gases and relays the necessary information to allow the optimum fuelling mixture to be achieved.

All systems are go! The first flick of the ignition switch and the Marelli dash lights up displaying all the system channels.

The Desmosedici is now virtually complete and is pictured having a full systems check prior to going on our dyno to be custom mapped.

After extensive dyno mapping work we were extremely satisfied with the end results, the many hours of work produced a very impressive 217.7bhp at 14,000.00 rpm, with more power available if we choose to raise the rev limit.

All that remains is for the custom painted carbon bodywork (MotoGP9 replica) to be fitted, the new 16.5” Marchesini wheels to arrive, and we will be off testing the Desmosedici on track with a professional rider to fine tune the traction control settings.
